The 2020 balance
Bahía de Algeciras ranks first among port authorities with 107.3 million tonnes in 2020 (1.9% less than in 2019). It is followed by Valencia (80.9 million) and Barcelona (59.5 million). Together, the three account for 48% of the total.
The steepest falls were recorded by Baleares (−26.4%), A Coruña (−22.6%) and Tarragona (−19.2%). The comparison is limited to port authorities that account for at least 1% of the total, so that an extreme swing at a small player does not distort the picture.
The rest of the top ten are Cartagena (4th, 32.9 million, −4.0%), Huelva (5th, 29.9 million, −11.5%), Bilbao (6th, 29.6 million, −16.6%), Tarragona (7th, 26.5 million, −19.2%), Las Palmas (8th, 25.8 million, −3.5%), Castellón (9th, 18.5 million, −10.5%) and Gijón (10th, 16.1 million, −7.2%).
At the bottom of the table are Ceuta (1.85 million), Vilagarcía (1.21 million) and Melilla (625,244 tonnes), out of a total of 28 port authorities with data.
The distribution is concentrated: the top five account for 60.2% of the total and 10 port authorities are enough to reach 80%, while the other 18 port authorities further down share the remaining 17.2%. 2 of the 28 port authorities with a comparison grew compared with 2019 and 26 fell.
Spanish ports handled 515.6 million tonnes of total traffic in 2020, 8.7% less than in 2019 (48.9 million less). These are the final figures from Puertos del Estado’s statistical yearbook for the 28 port authorities.
In the 2020 ranking, the ports moving up on 2019 are Cartagena (from 5th to 4th) and Huelva (from 6th to 5th); those moving down are Bilbao (from 4th to 6th). The top three positions are unchanged.

What this indicator measures
The ranking orders the 28 port authorities by tonnes accumulated over the year, which is the most stable comparison: a single month can swing because of one large call or a refinery shutdown. The share shows what part of the system each port represents, and the change compares with the same period of the previous year.
