Valencia ranks first among port authorities with 4.93 million tonnes in 2025 (21.5% more than in 2024). It is followed by Bahía de Algeciras (4.25 million) and Barcelona (2.97 million). Together, the three account for 74.9% of the total.

The largest increases were recorded by Castellón (+286.0%), Almería (+137.1%) and Bahía de Algeciras (+131.3%); the steepest falls by Cartagena (−27.9%) and Huelva (−25.3%). The comparison is limited to port authorities that account for at least 1% of the total, so that an extreme swing at a small player does not distort the picture.

The rest of the top ten are Tarragona (4th, 1.25 million, +21.3%), Huelva (5th, 906,983 tonnes, −25.3%), Castellón (6th, 402,925 tonnes, +286.0%), Cartagena (7th, 329,313 tonnes, −27.9%), Vigo (8th, 178,902 tonnes, +41.9%), Almería (9th, 162,867 tonnes, +137.1%) and Santander (10th, 156,711 tonnes, +371.5%).

At the bottom of the table are A Coruña (8,341 tonnes), Ferrol-San Cibrao (6,475 tonnes) and Santa Cruz de Tenerife (2,069 tonnes), out of a total of 25 port authorities with data.

The distribution is highly concentrated: the top five account for 88.2% of the total and 4 port authorities are enough to reach 80%, while the other 15 port authorities further down share the remaining 4.2%. 14 of the 20 port authorities with a comparison grew compared with 2024, 13 of them by double digits, and 6 fell.

Between 2006 and 2025 the figure went from 10.3 M to 16.2 M, an increase of 58.2% over 19 years (+2.4% a year on average). The best year was 2014 (20 M) and the worst 2023 (10.1 M).

What this indicator measures

Every year, in its statistical yearbook, Puertos del Estado publishes the tonnes loaded at Spanish ports for each country and the tonnes unloaded from it, authority by authority. This page covers Algeria. These are tonnes of cargo crossing the quay, including transhipped containers, not the value in euros of what Spain buys and sells, so they do not match customs figures, which are in the Foreign Trade section.

Context

Algeria is a long-standing supplier of natural gas and crude oil, unloaded at Spanish regasification plants and refineries. In the other direction go general cargo, steel products and building materials, plus ferry services from Alicante, Almería and Valencia.
