Of which, general cargo exports: 28 million tonnes in the year to August 2026, 6.2% less than a year earlier. Valencia ranks first on this measure, with 8.99 million tonnes.

Valencia ranks first among port authorities with 9.48 million tonnes in the year to August 2026 (5.6% less than a year earlier). It is followed by Barcelona (7.5 million) and Bahía de Algeciras (5.71 million). Together, the three account for 40.6% of the total.

The largest increases were recorded by Alicante (+40.1%), Castellón (+15.2%) and Bahía de Cádiz (+9.2%); the steepest falls by Avilés (−26.2%), A Coruña (−19.1%) and Valencia (−5.6%). The comparison is limited to port authorities that account for at least 1% of the total, so that an extreme swing at a small player does not distort the picture.

The rest of the top ten are Bilbao (4th, 4.84 million, −5.1%), Cartagena (5th, 4.78 million, +8.5%), Huelva (6th, 3.63 million, −3.0%), Almería (7th, 2.57 million, +5.1%), Tarragona (8th, 2.18 million, −5.3%), Gijón (9th, 2.15 million, −4.7%) and Castellón (10th, 2.11 million, +15.2%).

At the bottom of the table are Ceuta (19,275 tonnes), Baleares (1,303 tonnes) and Melilla (39 tonnes), out of a total of 28 port authorities with data.

The distribution is concentrated: the top five account for 57.8% of the total and 10 port authorities are enough to reach 80%, while the other 18 port authorities further down share the remaining 19.6%. 9 of the 28 port authorities with a comparison grew year on year, 4 of them by double digits, and 19 fell.

Context

Refined and chemical products, building materials, steel products, cars and food leave through the ports. General cargo exports, in containers or ro-ro, are the most closely linked to the industry and agri-food sector of each hinterland; bulk exports depend on refineries, cement plants and mines.
