What this indicator measures
Galicia has five port authorities of general interest: A Coruña, Ferrol-San Cibrao, Vigo, Marín y Ría de Pontevedra and Vilagarcía. This page adds up their total traffic from the Puertos del Estado monthly statistics, compares them with each other and calculates what share of the Spanish port system they represent. Ports run by the regional government (most fishing and leisure ports) are not included in these statistics.
Context
The Galician ports have very different profiles: A Coruña and Ferrol-San Cibrao rely on energy and industrial bulk (refining, regasification, aluminium), Vigo is the main port for fresh and frozen fish, cars and ro-ro, and Marín and Vilagarcía handle general cargo, timber and agri-food bulk. A Coruña’s new outer port at Punta Langosteira takes the traffic leaving the city docks.
