The comparison is limited to port authorities that account for at least 1% of the total, so that an extreme swing at a small player does not distort the picture.

The rest of the top ten are Barcelona (4th, 1.06 million, +48.7%), Cartagena (5th, 618,234 tonnes, −18.6%), Valencia (6th, 525,732 tonnes, −31.2%), Almería (7th, 245,747 tonnes, −7.2%), Las Palmas (8th, 204,920 tonnes, +29.9%), Santa Cruz de Tenerife (9th, 202,450 tonnes, +49.4%) and A Coruña (10th, 190,862 tonnes, +139.2%).

At the bottom of the table are Vigo (3,763 tonnes), Gijón (2,110 tonnes) and Marín y Ría de Pontevedra (580 tonnes), out of a total of 21 port authorities with data.

The distribution is highly concentrated: the top five account for 84.3% of the total and 5 port authorities are enough to reach 80%, while the other 11 port authorities further down share the remaining 3.2%. 9 of the 18 port authorities with a comparison grew compared with 2024, 9 of them by double digits, and 9 fell.

Between 2006 and 2025 the figure went from 14.4 M to 11 M, a decrease of 23.6% over 19 years (−1.4% a year on average). The best year was 2019 (18.3 M) and the worst 2025 (11 M).

What this indicator measures

Every year, in its statistical yearbook, Puertos del Estado publishes the tonnes loaded at Spanish ports for each country and the tonnes unloaded from it, authority by authority. This page covers Nigeria. These are tonnes of cargo crossing the quay, including transhipped containers, not the value in euros of what Spain buys and sells, so they do not match customs figures, which are in the Foreign Trade section.

Context

Nigeria mainly supplies crude oil and liquefied natural gas to Spanish refineries and regasification plants, so traffic is concentrated in a few energy ports. Loaded cargo, much smaller, consists of refined products and general cargo.
