Tanger Med (Morocco) ranks first among ports in the Mediterranean with 575.6 points in the third quarter of 2026 (3.3% more than a year earlier). It is followed by Valencia (Spain) (568.7 points) and Algeciras (Spain) (486.5 points).
The largest increases were recorded by Latakia (Syria) (+88.6%), Benghazi (Libya) (+40.5%) and Beirut (Lebanon) (+34.2%); the steepest falls by Derince (Türkiye) (−32.8%), Evyap Pt (Türkiye) (−28.3%) and Abu Qir (Egypt) (−25.4%).
The rest of the top ten are Ambarli (Türkiye) (4th, 481.6 points, −8.3%), Barcelona (Spain) (5th, 471.1 points, −0.5%), Piraeus (Greece) (6th, 427.6 points, −3.0%), Genoa (Italy) (7th, 413.1 points, −3.3%), Aliaga (Nemrut) (Türkiye) (8th, 354.6 points, +10.7%), Mersin (Türkiye) (9th, 348.6 points, +6.6%) and Alexandria (Egypt) (10th, 336.3 points, −11.4%).

What this indicator measures
UNCTAD’s Port Liner Shipping Connectivity Index (PLSCI) ranks ports every quarter by how well they are connected to the global network of container services: number of services and carriers, deployed capacity, size of the largest ship and ports with a direct connection. Its base is 100 for the world average in the first quarter of 2023. It is not a ranking by TEU: it measures how many transport options a port offers, not how much cargo it handles, although the large container ports tend to be near the top of both lists.

Context
The Mediterranean is the corridor between the Suez Canal and the Strait of Gibraltar, and its transhipment ports share those calls: Tanger Med, Valencia, Algeciras, Barcelona, Piraeus, Port Said, Genoa, Gioia Tauro and Marsaxlokk. The list brings together ports on both shores, from the Alboran Sea to the Levant, including those on the Strait.
