What this indicator measures
Andalusia handles close to a third of Spain’s containers, almost all through Bahía de Algeciras, the country’s second container port and the first in transhipment: most of its TEUs arrive on one ship and leave on another without entering Spain. Sevilla, Málaga, Cádiz and Huelva handle import and export containers on a much smaller scale; Almería and Motril, token volumes.
Context
Andalusian container traffic depends on the decisions of the major carriers (Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM and Hapag-Lloyd) on their Asia–Europe services and on competition from Tanger Med across the Strait. The APM and TTI Algeciras terminals concentrate the activity; Cádiz’s new container terminal and Málaga’s growth in containers are the other two fronts.
