The Port of Algeciras has concluded the first day of Fruit Attraction 2026 with a representation formed by the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) and 24 companies from its port community. The delegation will participate until Thursday at IFEMA Madrid from the space of Port Community System, where it concentrates its commercial activity on the services available for international chains of fruits and vegetables.

The presence from Algeciras occurs at the largest edition held so far by Fruit Attraction. The fair has gathered since this Tuesday 2,500 exhibiting companies from 78 countries, occupies 162,000 square meters distributed among ten pavilions, and expects to receive 121,000 professionals from over 150 countries. Almost 70% of the surface is dedicated to Fresh Produce, while areas such as Fresh Food Logistics group the services of transportation, storage, refrigeration, and technology related to the international movement of fresh products.

In this scenario, the proposal from the Port of Algeciras is structured around a business community that covers different phases of the same expedition. Container terminals, refrigerated warehouses, customs representatives, forwarders, road transport operators, companies specialized in reefer goods, maritime services, Ro-Ro connections, and handling and logistics companies are part of a chain that may begin at an agricultural production in Morocco, Central America, or South America and end at a distribution platform in Spain or another European market.

The refrigerated infrastructure constitutes one of the main elements of this offer. The two container terminals of the Port of Algeciras combine to over 5,500 connections for reefer equipment, monitored 24 hours for import, export, and transshipment operations. This capacity is complemented by cold terminals and nearby logistics areas with joint space for more than 30,000 pallets.

TTI Algeciras provides 1,518 of those reefer connections at Isla Verde Exterior. The terminal allows storing refrigerated equipment in four heights, has direct rail access, and currently has a design annual capacity of 1.6 million TEUs, which will increase to 2.1 million with the planned development of Phase B until 2028.

The refrigerated container finds continuity outside the terminals in facilities specialized in storage. Americold operates at the Isla Verde Wharf with areas for goods at ambient temperature, refrigerated, and frozen, as well as services related to import, export, and customs storage. SAM Algeciras has, for its part, 6,300 square meters of refrigerated storage, eleven bi-temperature chambers, and capacity for over 8,700 pallets, in addition to fifteen loading and unloading docks.

The available capacity in the port area also includes other business proposals. Transbull has over 2,400 square meters allocated to goods under controlled temperature and 21 loading docks for refrigerated cargo. Nieves Logistics Operator combines dry, refrigerated, and frozen warehouses with temperature-controlled transportation, while other companies in the delegation incorporate storage services, consolidation, cross-docking, order preparation, and treatment of perishable goods within broader logistical networks.

The cold does not limit itself to storage. Raminatrans has a reefer division that works with full loads, groupage, air, road, and maritime operations, along with temperature-controlled storage, consolidation, and cross-docking services. TIBA has a specific division for perishables that includes fresh, frozen, and dehydrated fruits and vegetables, while LeoProex claims over twenty years of experience in reefer transportation within a multimodal offer that combines sea, road, air, and rail.

This capacity serves a geography that is increasingly diversified. Refrigerated cargo from the Port of Algeciras recorded a growth of 4% in the cumulative up to August 2026. Costa Rica and Peru remain among the main origins, while Egypt shows a 185% increase since 2024, mainly associated with citrus. Pineapple, avocado, and banana rank among the products with the highest presence in imports, while stone fruit —apricot, peach, and cherry— appears among exports. Cassava shows, according to data released by the APBA, an increase of 111% in imports.

The connection with Latin America therefore occupies a specific part of the commercial activity developed in Madrid. UCC Iberia works from a network with presence in Chile, Peru, Colombia, Costa Rica, the United States, and Spain and is specialized in maritime transportation and logistics for perishable goods. TIBA, LeoProex, Raminatrans, ECS 360 Logistics, and Total Logistic Services also incorporate international maritime services, reefer, forwarding, and multimodal operations that allow connecting Algeciras with American producing markets.

The profile of Algeciras in Fruit Attraction is not limited, however, to transoceanic traffics. The Strait configures another of the major corridors of the offer presented this week, especially for the entry of Moroccan agricultural products into the European Union.

DFDS Iberia operates the Ro-Ro cargo connection between Algeciras and Tangier Med, prepared for semi-trailers and reefer containers. The scheduled crossing is one hour and a half, and the shipping company maintains a minimum of two daily departures in each direction for unaccompanied units, in addition to services aimed at accompanied traffic. The cargo terminals remain operational 24 hours.

Transportation and logistics companies from the delegation also work on this corridor. Bolipesk Transport combines its own fleet, refrigerated transport, and customs management between Morocco and Europe. Nieves develops movements of fruits, vegetables, and other food items between Tangier Med and southern peninsular ports, while Maritime del Estrecho incorporates refrigerated trucks into its land offer. ECS 360 Logistics also articulates services between Spain, Europe, and Africa, along with international maritime transportation for other markets.

The Ro-Ro model allows a part of the fruit and vegetables from Morocco to make the journey in the same transport unit before and after the maritime crossing. Tomatoes, berries, avocados, and other products arrive at the port in trucks or semi-trailers and, once the corresponding procedures are completed in Algeciras, can continue by road to their destinations in Spain or other European countries.

The border constitutes precisely another of the blocks on which the participation of the port community supports. A significant part of the companies displaced to Madrid works in customs representation, transit, and coordination of the official controls affecting products from third countries.

AGSA-Partida, Algetransit, Proex Logistics, Customs Support through the Transito 2000 structure, Bernardina Customs and Transport, Total Logistic Services, Salvat Logistics, and Transsur develop different services related to imports, exports, transit, and procedures before control bodies. This activity is joined by other operators from the delegation that incorporate customs management as part of a broader transportation or storage offer.

The Border Control Post of Algeciras concentrates part of these procedures. Goods subjected to control may require sanitary, phytosanitary, veterinary, or commercial quality inspections before leaving the port area. Some companies maintain operational staff in the facilities themselves or in their immediate surroundings to follow up on files and coordinate inspections.

The APBA concurrently maintains the expansion project of the BCP, with an investment exceeding 17 million euros. The action considers increasing from 12 to 30 the gates designated for plant inspection, in addition to actions on cold and air conditioning systems. The expansion adds to the management model through prior appointment initially implemented in Algeciras and subsequently extended to the rest of the ports.

The documentary management of these goods links to another of the projects that the Port Authority presents at Fruit Attraction: the interoperability between the Central American Digital Trade Platform of SIECA and the Port Community System of the Port of Algeciras.

The project is oriented towards the digital exchange of phytosanitary and zoosanitary certificates and other documentation related to trade between Central America and the European Union. The initiative develops within the Global Gateway strategy and seeks that part of the information required for entry procedures can be transmitted electronically from the country of origin before the arrival of the goods.

This line of work will continue on November 17 and 18, when Algeciras will host a high-level EU-Central America mission with expected participation from ministers of economy and trade from Central America, representatives from the European Union and Spain, logistics operators, and exporting companies.

Digitalization also reaches road traffic. The APBA shows in Madrid new functionalities of Teleport 2.0 aimed at managing heavy traffic, a tool directly related to the thousands of trucks and semi-trailers that use the connections of the Strait and to the movements associated with the port’s terminals and logistics services.

The chain presented at Fruit Attraction also includes the necessary operations once the goods are inside the venue. Tramarco develops maritime agency services, handling, loading, unloading, transshipment, and transport associated with inspections and deliveries. Logistika 360 works in Ro-Ro stowage, horizontal transport, and port movements, activities related to loading and unloading of the rolling units that use the lines of the Strait.

Other operators expand the distribution radius after clearance. Salvat Logistics has a network with capacity exceeding 48,000 euro pallets and land transport services to different European markets. Total Logistic Services combines road, maritime, air, and multimodal transport, while Maritime del Estrecho integrates refrigerated transport, customs, and a network of warehouses between Málaga and Algeciras. These structures allow connecting the arrival of the cargo at the port with logistical platforms and final destinations located outside the bay.

Fruit Attraction thus serves as a meeting point for two traffic models that converge in Algeciras. On one hand, products from America, Africa, and other markets arriving in refrigerated containers through long-distance maritime services. On the other, the agricultural goods crossing from Morocco through the Ro-Ro connections of the Strait and continuing by road.

The first day has also placed the business community in direct contact with producers, importers, exporters, distributors, and transport operators. Algeciras companies have developed their own meeting agendas throughout the day within a fair where logistics occupies a specific space alongside the production and marketing of fruits and vegetables.

The participation of the APBA and the 24 companies will continue until Thursday, October 8, in the space of the Port Community System. During the remaining two days, the delegation will maintain its commercial activity around reefer traffics, connections with Morocco, Central America, and South America, border services, and transportation and storage solutions that are part of the horticultural chain linked to the Port of Algeciras.
