The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) and Baleària, a shipping company committed to its Green Strategy, have launched a campaign to raise awareness on board the company's ferries to bring passengers closer to the Guardians of the Sea project, focused on the marine fauna of the Bay of Algeciras and the Strait of Gibraltar. The action will take place between July and September, coinciding with the time of greatest presence of cetaceans in the area and with the Operation Crossing of the Strait (OPE).

The campaign also targets children with the distribution of an activity booklet in Spanish and French, with games, illustrations, and educational proposals about the marine environment, designed to promote knowledge and respect for nature from an early age.

The action is part of Guardians of the Sea, a project that the APBA launched in 2023 to promote more responsible navigation and reduce the risk of collisions and the impact of maritime traffic on cetaceans in an ecologically sensitive environment. Among the actions developed so far are training actions aimed at professionals in the maritime sector and the search for solutions for monitoring underwater noise.

This outreach line also includes the installation of informative signage in the sports docks of El Saladillo (Algeciras) and Tarifa, provided by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITERD) and aimed at users of recreational vessels, with recommendations for respectful navigation with cetaceans. In this same area is the recent publication of the Cetaceans Guide in the Strait, a scientific-dissemination resource available on the APBA website that compiles information about the 15 observable species in the area.

On the other hand, the APBA is working on the development of an application for the real-time detection of cetacean presence on ship routes. The tool, designed for captains and skippers operating in the Strait lines, aims to improve prevention capacity and contribute to safer navigation for marine fauna.

The Strait of Gibraltar concentrates one of the highest densities of maritime traffic in the world, a space that daily shares with the seasonal passage of several cetacean species between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. The coincidence of the campaign with the Operation Crossing of the Strait increases, during the summer months, the number of passengers receiving this information on board.
