Star Container Spain, a company belonging to the Maersk Group dedicated to the storage, maintenance, and repair of maritime containers, has joined the Green Strategy of the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA), which with this incorporation reaches a total of 45 participating organizations.
The membership was formalized during a meeting with the president of the APBA, Gerardo Landaluce, and his team, which included David Luque, manager of the container depot of Star Container Spain in Algeciras; Domingo Gutiérrez, director of the Maersk depots in Europe; and Samuel Moreno, technical coordinator and environmental manager.
The company representatives presented to the Port Authority the different actions carried out at their facilities in Cortijo Real, in Algeciras, with which the company has reduced its carbon footprint per TEU by 57% between 2023 and 2025. In the same period, the reduction of the total carbon footprint has reached 40%.
Star Container has certified management systems in energy and waste management and has calculated its corresponding carbon footprint for Scopes 1 and 2 using a validated methodology certified by AFNOR.
This procedure allows the company to identify the emissions associated with the journey each container makes within its facilities and to apply measures aimed at its reduction.
The activity of Star Container also incorporates principles of circular economy through the repair, refurbishment, and extension of the useful life of maritime containers. These actions help reduce the need to manufacture new units and, in doing so, the consumption of raw materials and energy and the emissions linked to production processes.
During the meeting, the APBA and Star Container also addressed cooperation between the port authority and the companies operating in the Algeciras Port environment regarding issues related to energy transition and decarbonization.
The incorporation of Star Container raises the number of organizations adhering to the Green Strategy of the APBA to 45, an initiative aimed at establishing a framework for collaboration with the port community companies on environmental, social, and economic sustainability.
The strategy includes the participation of companies and organizations linked to port activities within a common roadmap in areas related to sustainability and the transformation of the port model.
With its adherence, Star Container formally incorporates its activity into this collaboration framework of the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras, after having applied measures in its Cortijo Real facilities that, according to data provided by the company, have allowed them to reduce their carbon footprint per TEU by 57% and their total carbon footprint by 40% between 2023 and 2025.
