Definition
TARIC is the integrated tariff of the European Union: the classification that assigns each product a ten-digit code and, with it, the customs duties and trade measures that apply to it on entering the Union.
The code is built up in levels. The first six digits are those of the Harmonised System, common to almost every country in the world. The next two form the Union’s Combined Nomenclature, which is the one used in foreign trade statistics. The last two are specific to TARIC and reflect measures such as quotas, suspensions or anti-dumping duties.
Classifying goods correctly is the first step in any customs clearance: the duty, the certificates required and the controls all depend on the code. Export and import statistics by product are organised using this same classification.
