Definition
The CPPI is the index with which the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence rank the world’s container ports by their efficiency, measured by the time ships spend in port.
It starts from a simple figure: the hours that elapse from the moment a container ship arrives in the port area until it leaves the berth with the operation completed. That time is compared between ports taking into account the size of the ship and the number of containers moved during the call.
It measures speed, not volume: a medium-sized port can rank above a much larger one. The ranking is published once a year and is sensitive to disruptions, such as congestion or route diversions, which lengthen waiting times.
