Definition
The LSCI is the index with which the United Nations trade and development agency (UNCTAD) measures how well connected a country is to the global network of scheduled container services. The higher it is, the more services, the more capacity and the more direct destinations.
It is calculated from the shipping lines’ scheduled itineraries and combines six components: the number of ship calls, the annual capacity deployed in TEU, the number of regular services, the number of shipping lines providing them, the size of the largest ship calling and the number of countries with a direct connection.
It does not measure traffic but supply: a country can handle many containers with few services, or have many connections thanks to transhipment ports. The version for each port is the PLSCI.
