Definition
The services production index measures every month how the volume of activity of the companies in a services sector is changing, net of the effect of prices. It is expressed in points against a base year set at 100.
It is published by Eurostat from the data of each country’s statistical institute, with the same methodology for the whole European Union, which allows comparison. It starts from the companies’ turnover and strips out the sector’s inflation, so that what remains is real activity.
For transport and storage it is the indicator that sums up how logistics as a whole is performing, from the lorry to the warehouse. It is usually given adjusted for calendar and seasonal effects, so that one month can be compared with the previous one.
