What is fresh fish in port statistics

Data · Source · Puertos del Estado

Definition

Fresh fish is the fish and shellfish that fishing vessels land at a port without freezing or processing, for first sale at the fish market. Port statistics count it in tonnes, separately from cargo.

Puertos del Estado records only the landings at ports of general interest. The fish that comes in through the ports run by the autonomous communities, which include many of the fishing ports, does not appear in this figure, and frozen fish is counted as cargo.

In tonnes it is a small item of port traffic, but it sustains fish markets, ice plants, slipways and part of the employment of many ports on the Cantabrian coast, in Galicia and on the Gulf of Cádiz.
