Definition
A biofuel is a liquid fuel obtained from organic matter instead of petroleum: vegetable oils, used cooking oil, animal fats or agricultural residues. The most common are biodiesel, hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and bioethanol.
They are blended with diesel and petrol or replace them, and count towards the European targets for renewable energy in transport. In the maritime sector they are used in blends with conventional fuel to meet emission limits that are tightened every few years.
They pass through ports as liquid bulk, both the finished product and the feedstocks from which it is made. The Puertos del Estado statistics record them as a commodity category of their own.
