SAM Algeciras participates in Fruit Attraction 2026 as one of the 24 companies from the port community that accompany the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) at IFEMA Madrid. The company adds to the joint offer of the port a platform specialized in the storage and handling of refrigerated and frozen goods, with the capacity for more than 8,700 pallets.
The complex currently has 6,300 square meters specifically designated for refrigerated storage, divided into eleven bi-temperature chambers that allow working with both refrigerated and frozen products. The facility also has 15 docks for the simultaneous loading and unloading of vehicles and containers.
In addition to this area, there are 1,800 square meters of refrigerated docks and aisles, designed so that the operations of entry, exit, and internal movement of goods can be carried out under controlled temperature. For horticultural products, this configuration allows maintaining the cold chain during processes such as unloading a container, temporary storage, order preparation, or subsequent dispatch.
The activities of SAM Algeciras include storage, handling, and transfer of goods, order preparation, labeling, quality control, and consolidation of reefer containers. The platform also has a PTI tower with a capacity for 80 refrigerated containers and services related to the maintenance and preparation of these equipment.
Traceability is another component of refrigerated operations. The company uses online control systems for stocks and movements of goods, allowing the location of stored products to be known and maintaining a record of operations carried out within the chambers. The facility also uses natural refrigerants in its cooling systems.
For the horticultural sector, one of the specific services of SAM Algeciras is found in phytosanitary operations related to export. Its facilities are authorized to carry out inspections of plant products destined for certain third countries, allowing these controls to be carried out within the platform before shipping.
The authorization includes products such as citrus fruits, non-citrus fruits, stone fruits, and tomatoes and has been incorporating different destination markets. Among them are China, South Korea, Australia, the United States, Mexico, India, Indonesia, Israel, Canada, South Africa, Hong Kong, and Ecuador.
The facilities also allow the development of phytosanitary treatments required for certain export and re-export operations. The ability to combine these procedures with refrigerated storage avoids having to move the goods to another facility to carry out part of the controls and treatments prior to their departure by sea.
SAM Algeciras also has different customs figures related to its logistics activity, including Temporary Deposit Warehouse, Customs Deposit, Deposit Different from Customs, and Authorized Location for Export Goods. This structure allows for the management of goods subject to different regimes while they remain stored or are prepared to continue their journey.
The platform also has certifications related to the storage and treatment of agri-food products. In 2025, it renewed its certification for organic products in refrigerated facilities, allowing for the storage and preservation of such goods under controlled refrigeration.
Its location, just over a kilometer from the Port of Algeciras, connects these capabilities with the maritime traffic of perishables using the site. For goods arriving in a reefer container, the facility allows for operations of deconsolidation, storage, preparation, or dispatch while maintaining the required thermal conditions during their stay on the platform.
SAM Algeciras is also part of a multimodal logistics complex of more than 120,000 square meters that incorporates dry storage, container depot, workshops, and other auxiliary services. The refrigerated activity constitutes the part of this infrastructure directly related to the international chains of fresh and frozen products.
These capabilities are integrated into the offer that the APBA presents during Fruit Attraction, where the Port of Algeciras brings together more than 5,500 connections for refrigerated containers in its two terminals and more than 30,000 pallet positions in refrigerated terminals and logistics areas in its surroundings.
The capacity declared by SAM Algeciras, exceeding 8,700 pallets, represents a significant part of that available storage and allows for combining within the immediate vicinity of the port refrigerated preservation, handling, customs services, and certain phytosanitary operations related to the international trade of fruits and vegetables.
