The Board of Directors of the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) analyzed today in its ordinary session the evolution of the facility's activity, which concludes May with nearly 9.2 million tons moved and a growth of 3.1% compared to the same month in 2025. The containerized import cargo, with more than 25,000 TEUs full and an increase of 5.7%, along with liquid bulk, which totaled 2.6 million tons of imported and exported energy products (+16%), explain a large part of the month's performance.
With these records, total traffic between January and May stands at 41.3 million tons (-3.7%), a figure that gets closer each month to equilibrium with the previous year after the mismatch caused in winter by the mandatory breaks due to the storm train. By chapters, the accumulated total counts 11.3 million tons of liquid bulk (-5.2%) and 108,238 tons of solid bulk (-30%). General cargo reaches 27.3 million tons (-3%), with rising products like canned goods, automotive parts, and wood, while ship provisioning reaches 1.1 million tons (-9.7%).
Container traffic at the terminals approaches two million TEUs in the accumulated total, with a variation of +3.7%. At this point in the agenda, the institution's president, Gerardo Landaluce, presented the latest efficiency ratios collected by the World Bank and S&P Global in the 6th edition of the report The Container Port Performance Index 2025: A comparable Assessment of Performance based on Vessel Time in Port (World Bank 2026), published in recent days, which places the Andalusian dock as the most efficient in Europe. After analyzing the scale of over 1,900 container ships at the Strait port terminals, the document ranks the facility in the twelfth position in the world ranking, with a performance that improves by 11.8% compared to the previous year.
In the Strait region, the month prior to the start of the Operation Paso del Estrecho 2026 (OPE) saw shipments of passengers and vehicles grow by around 10%. The accumulated since January amounts to 1.8 million passengers (-1.7%) and 392,775 vehicles (-2.1%). In the truck traffic between both shores, after another May above 50,000 embarked and disembarked units, the year's total rises to 241,750 trucks (-0.7%).
Among the other agenda items, the council has approved giving the green light to the creation of the Algeciras Bay Blue Port Innovation Cluster Association and the accession of the APBA to it. The initiative comes from the Algeciras City Council, the University of Cádiz, the Technological Campus Foundation, the Chamber of Commerce of the Campo de Gibraltar, and the Port Authority itself. The aim is to establish a stable grouping of companies, research centers, and public and private entities linked to the blue economy, logistics, port activities, and technological innovation. The association intends to facilitate public-private collaboration, accelerate innovation in the port and logistics ecosystem, improve access to competitive financing, and consolidate the role of the Bay of Algeciras as one of the main hubs of blue economy, advanced logistics, and port innovation in southern Europe.
