The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) has launched an action plan for the removal of invasive algae in various sections of the coastline of the Campo de Gibraltar, in light of the increasing environmental, health, and social impact generated by the proliferation of the species Rugulopterix okamurae.

This algae, native to the northwestern Pacific, was first detected in the area of the Strait of Gibraltar in 2015, and since 2017 it has been accumulating recurrently between the months of May and September in coastal areas such as Tarifa and the Bay of Algeciras. Studies conducted by the University of Málaga and Kobe University confirmed its origin and invasive character.

The massive accumulation of these algae on the shore causes its decomposition, generating bad odors, proliferation of insects, and unhealthy conditions, especially on urban beaches. This situation has caused discomfort among residents and visitors, in addition to affecting public use of these areas. In light of this scenario, the APBA has decided to intervene in the public port domain of the municipality of Tarifa, specifically in the section between La Caleta and Punta Camorro, as well as in the beach of El Chinarral, in Algeciras, which suffers from the same problem.

The contract provides for the removal of algae in two distinct sections: 335 linear meters in La Caleta and 417 meters in El Chinarral. The works will be carried out between June and September, coinciding with the summer season, and will be executed through two types of actions: shock interventions to eliminate large accumulations and maintenance work to prevent their reappearance.
