Spain has 893 active AEO authorisations on 2 September 2026, according to the European Commission register, which places it 6th in the European Union. 554 are full authorisations (AEOF, customs simplifications and security), 310 customs only and 29 security only.
In Europe, the register’s top three are Germany (6,127), France (1,888) and Italy (1,690). Spain, with 892, ranks 6th.
EED Data locates 617 companies by province (617% of the register) by matching their names against the BORME; the rest have no identifiable registered office in the gazettes.
Barcelona ranks first among provinces with 188 companies on 2 September 2026. It is followed by Madrid (140 companies) and Valencia/València (57 companies). Together, the three account for 62.4% of the total.
The rest of the top ten are Cádiz (4th, 24 companies), Bizkaia (5th, 19 companies), Castellón/Castelló (6th, 19 companies), Murcia (7th, 16 companies), Tarragona (8th, 16 companies), Sevilla (9th, 13 companies) and Gipuzkoa (10th, 12 companies).

What this indicator measures
The Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) is the trust label customs grants to companies that meet solvency, control and security requirements: freight forwarders, shipping lines, terminals, hauliers, manufacturers and importers. There are three types: customs simplifications (AEOC), security (AEOS) and full (AEOF). Every month EED Data reads the European Commission register and locates companies by province using the BORME.
Context
Spain is among the five EU countries with the most AEO authorisations, behind Germany, the Netherlands and France. Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia hold most of them thanks to their logistics base; in Andalusia, Cádiz (Algeciras) and Sevilla stand out. Large shippers increasingly require AEO status, and it shortens border checks.
