What the data say · July 2026
69.1% of the value of what Spain bought from and sold to countries outside the European Union in July 2026 travelled by sea; by weight, the maritime share was 85.9%. Extra-EU seaborne trade totalled €22,326 million in the month, 5.6% more than a year earlier, with 17.2 million tonnes.
After shipping, the modes carrying the most value are air (15.2%) and road (13.2%). Air carries products of high value per kilo, while road handles trade with Morocco, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Turkey.
Only trade with non-EU countries is counted: intra-EU trade does not declare a mode of transport at customs.
The highest point in the series was August 2023, at 75.2%, and the lowest January 2026, at 68.2%; the last twelve points add up to 0.9% less than the previous twelve.

Eurostat (Comext) records the mode of transport of every item traded by Member States with non-EU countries: sea, road, rail, air, pipeline… This page measures what percentage of the value and weight of Spain’s extra-EU trade travels by sea. It only covers extra-EU trade: intra-EU trade does not declare a mode of transport.
Context
The vast majority of the weight of extra-EU trade travels by sea, and around two thirds of its value; air carries products of high value per kilo (pharmaceuticals, electronics, aerospace) and road handles trade with Morocco, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Turkey. Spanish ports are therefore the main gateway for trade with the rest of the world.
