Moroccan port operator Marsa Maroc has received two new Post-Panamax quay cranes for the East Container Terminal at the Port of Casablanca, as part of its equipment and port-facilities renewal program. The units are intended for loading and unloading container ships and form part of the investments planned by the company for its terminals in Morocco.

The new Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes were supplied by Chinese manufacturer Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC) and are designed to handle vessels larger than those accommodated by the former locks of the Panama Canal. Their addition expands the resources available for container handling at one of the facilities Marsa Maroc operates at the Port of Casablanca.

The acquisition is part of an order for 18 quay cranes and 50 RTG yard cranes, intended for the ports of Casablanca and Nador West Med. The transaction is included in the group’s financial statement for the year ended 2025, which reports consolidated investments of 2.415 billion dirhams for that year, compared with 715 million recorded in 2024. The documents also include work related to the superstructures of the new Nador West Med terminals and the modernization of facilities in Casablanca and Jorf Lasfar.

The East Container Terminal in Casablanca has 600 linear meters of quay, four berths and depths ranging from 11 to 12 meters, according to the technical specifications published by Marsa Maroc. Its facilities include approximately 60 hectares of container storage space and 400 electrical connections for refrigerated units. The operator reports an annual nominal capacity of 700,000 TEUs.

At the same port complex, Marsa Maroc also operates through its subsidiary TC3PC, which is responsible for Container Terminal 3. The terminal has 530 meters of quay, depths ranging from 12.5 to 14 meters, and an annual capacity of 600,000 TEUs. According to the company’s information, the facility has four Post-Panamax cranes and 14 RTG units.

The addition of the new cranes coincides with the program to expand container operations in Casablanca. Marsa Maroc’s 2025 annual report outlines plans to deepen quays, build new berths and reorganize storage areas, providing for an additional capacity of 900,000 TEUs.

The same document puts the group-managed container traffic at the Port of Casablanca at 1.125 million TEUs in 2025, up from 1.033 million the previous year, an increase of 9%.

At the same time, Marsa Maroc is continuing its equipment program at Nador West Med, where West Med Container Terminal (WMCT), a company jointly owned by the Moroccan operator and Terminal Investment Limited (TIL), a subsidiary of the MSC Group, has received STS cranes manufactured by ZPMC. The terminal is scheduled to begin operations in the last quarter of 2026, according to the timetable announced by the company.
