APM Terminals has received four new quay cranes at its Maasvlakte II terminal in the Port of Rotterdam, part of the second batch of equipment manufactured by Chinese company ZPMC for the expansion project at the facility. The units arrived on October 12 aboard the heavy-lift vessel Zhen Hua 27 and will undergo various tests and commissioning work before being brought into port operations.

According to the terminal, the shipment comprises three Super Quay Cranes (SQC), designed to handle containers on large ships, and one Barge Feeder Crane (BFC), designed to serve feeder vessels and barges. The equipment is part of the contract awarded to ZPMC to supply twelve new cranes for the expansion of Maasvlakte II, eight of which have already been transported to Rotterdam.

The arrival of these units completes the sea voyage of the second shipment, which departed from ZPMC’s facilities on Changxing Island, China, on August 1. As El Estrecho Digital reported on September 8, the four cranes were transported after various technical checks related to their mechanical, electrical, and automation systems had been completed.

During preparations for loading, CES teams worked together with APM Terminals Maasvlakte II, ZPMC, and ABB to check the components and interfaces required for integration into the terminal’s automated operations. The work included inspections of camera systems, electrical connections, and various parts of the cranes’ mechanisms.

The first batch of four units arrived at the Dutch port on March 22, also aboard the Zhen Hua 27, after departing China in January. That shipment likewise included three large quay cranes and one unit intended for operations involving feeder vessels and barges. The supply program includes nine cranes for the deep-water quay and another three to serve this latter type of traffic.

The addition of machinery is part of the expansion of Maasvlakte II, a project that includes the construction of an additional 1,000 meters of quay for large container ships, bringing the total length of this infrastructure to 2,000 meters. The work also includes new container storage areas, four additional railway tracks, and the installation of automated equipment, including autonomous terminal tractors.

APM Terminals expects the facility to have an annual handling capacity of up to 5.4 million TEUs once the expansion is complete. The terminal, which has been operational since 2015, is part of the network of facilities used by the Gemini Cooperation, comprising Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd.

Separately, the two companies announced an agreement in August under which Hapag-Lloyd will acquire a 25% stake in APM Terminals Maasvlakte II, a transaction that remains subject to the relevant regulatory approvals. APM Terminals will retain operational control of the facility.
