Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) will start its operations on September 1 at the PC14-17 container terminals, located at the southern dock of the Port Island area (Stage 2) of the port of Kobe, as communicated by the Japanese company.

The facilities are part of the Kobe International Container Terminal (KICT), a complex to which K Line will transfer its activities after a process that began in 2023 and was developed together with Kobe-Osaka International Port Corporation and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL).

K Line signed a basic agreement in June 2023 with both companies for its transfer to KICT and for the integrated use of the terminal's facilities. The operation is linked to the expansion and functional improvement of the facilities located in Port Island (Stage 2), within the port of Kobe.

Since signing that agreement, the shipping company and other involved parties have worked on the necessary preparations to carry out the transfer and start operations at the PC14-17 terminals. The process will now lead to the commissioning of the new facilities for K Line starting September 1.

With the incorporation of the company, KICT will become one of the largest container terminals in Japan. According to data provided by K Line, the facilities will handle nearly 40% of the foreign trade containers passing through the port of Kobe.

The concentration of operations at KICT will also allow for greater capacity to accommodate large container ships. The company also anticipates greater flexibility in berthing operations, an aspect related to the integrated use of port facilities.

Another area contemplated in the reorganization is transshipment traffic. K Line believes that the new configuration of operations will improve conditions for this type of cargo by facilitating its management within the terminal.

The operations of the facilities will involve Nitto Total Logistics, a company belonging to the K Line group that will be responsible for operating the facilities. The shipping company notes that, through this structure, the group will continue to provide its services to shipping companies and their clients from the Kobe terminal.

The transfer to KICT occurs in a context where K Line is also considering its clients' needs related to digital transformation and environmental initiatives. The company indicates that it intends to respond flexibly to these requirements within the activities carried out in the new facilities.

On environmental matters, K Line links this line of work with its "K Line Environmental Vision 2050" strategy. This framework outlines the company’s environmental policy and its approach to integrate environmental protection into its business activities.

K Line's entry into the PC14-17 terminals thus represents the realization of the agreement signed in June 2023 with Kobe-Osaka International Port Corporation and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines to reorganize its operations in the port of Kobe. Following preparatory work done in recent years, the established date for the start of operations is September 1.

The new operations will be integrated into KICT and will primarily focus on concentrating a significant portion of the external container traffic from Kobe, the ability to receive large container ships, greater flexibility in the use of berths, and better conditions for managing transshipment traffic.
