Tokyo Port recorded an international traffic of 367,388 TEUs in May 2026, 0.1% more than in the same month of the previous year, according to the latest provisional data published by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Bureau of Ports and Marinas. The official statistics also place the total container movement at the facility, including domestic traffic, at approximately 409,000 TEUs, 1.3% less year-on-year.
Of the 367,388 TEUs related to foreign trade, 263,288 TEUs were loaded containers, 0.9% less than a year earlier, while empty containers reached 104,100 TEUs, with a growth of 2.7%.
The evolution was different between exports and imports. Loaded containers destined for export decreased by 10.4% to 57,409 TEUs, while imports of loaded units increased by 2.1%, with 205,879 TEUs.
In the case of empty equipment, exports stood at 102,658 TEUs, 1.9% more, while imports reached 1,442 TEUs, with an increase of 114.9% compared to May 2025. Overall, the figures reflect a greater weight of loaded imports within the international activity of Japan's main container port.
Domestic container traffic reached 41,936 TEUs, representing a year-on-year decline of 12.3%. The sum of international and domestic traffic puts the port movement in May slightly above 409,000 TEUs, in line with the figure of 409,000 TEUs released by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government itself.
During the first five months of 2026, Tokyo Port managed 1,280,625 TEUs loaded in international traffic. Of this amount, 314,704 TEUs corresponded to exports, 1.6% less, and 965,921 TEUs to imports, with a reduction of 0.8%.
International empty containers added another 480,390 TEUs between January and May, 4.6% more than in the same period of 2025. Exports of empty equipment reached 475,993 TEUs, 5.1% more, while imports decreased by 31%, to 4,397 TEUs.
In the domestic segment, the cumulative total reached 93,385 loaded TEUs, 1.9% less, and 123,824 empty TEUs, with a decline of 15.3%. When adding international and domestic traffic, Tokyo Port recorded approximately 1.98 million TEUs between January and May. Loaded containers totaled 1.37 million TEUs, 1.1% less, while empty containers reached 604,214 TEUs, 0.2% less.
The latest data from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government also introduces a slight revision compared to the first estimate released by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. The statistical advance published on July 29 initially placed Tokyo's international traffic in May at 367,332 TEUs, with 160,049 TEUs of exports and 207,283 TEUs of imports. The Ministry itself warns that these initial figures may be modified later in the monthly port statistics.
The monthly statistics from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, updated later, is what raises the record to 367,388 TEUs used in the most recent data. The official website of Tokyo Port states that provisional figures and first estimates may be subject to modifications as statistical information is completed.
