APM Terminals Maasvlakte II, the automated terminal that the company operates in the port of Rotterdam, closed the 2025 financial year with a net profit of 24 million euros, more than double the 11 million recorded in 2024. This result came after a year of strong growth in traffic, higher income from prices, and the entry into operation of the Gemini network, the operational alliance between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd.

The terminal's revenue has increased from 189 million to 220 million euros, in a fiscal year conditioned by the reorganization of services linked to the new Gemini scheme. Maasvlakte II has positioned itself as one of the main nodes of this network, which has led to the gradual replacement of MSC's calls, Maersk's former partner, with services operated by Hapag-Lloyd.

The operational change caused a complex start to the year. During the first months of 2025, container volumes dropped notably due to the transition between alliances and the adaptation of maritime rotations. However, activity recovered strongly starting in the spring, allowing the terminal to close the fiscal year with the highest volume in its history.

The arrival of more large container ships under the Gemini network has contributed to increasing the utilization of the facility and improving revenues. According to the annual accounts, 2025 has been the year of highest activity since the terminal began operations. This behavior has been complemented by a positive effect derived from higher prices, which has also impacted the revenue figures.

Operating costs, including personnel, maintenance, and repairs, have increased by just over 10 million euros, reaching 162 million. However, revenue growth has surpassed the increase in expenses, allowing for a net result increase to 24 million euros.

During the fiscal year, the expansion of the terminal has also picked up pace, a project that will allow for the doubling of the container handling capacity of Maasvlakte II. According to the annual report, Maersk has contributed an investment of 325 million euros and additional loans worth 400 million to finance the work.

The expansion is already showing a notable degree of execution. A good part of the civil and electrical works were completed during 2025, while the first new STS cranes arrived from China in March. Management expects that the first phase of the expanded terminal will enter service by the end of 2026, while the rest of the capacity will be integrated during 2027.

The company's goal is to double capacity without a proportional increase in staff, through intensive use of automation. Nevertheless, the number of workers has increased from 465 employees in 2024 to 539 in 2025. Labor costs have also risen, from 51 to 56 million euros.

In the report signed in April, the terminal's management noted that the conflict in the Middle East had not had a material effect on Maasvlakte II's operations. The company indicated that the evolution of the situation is still under monitoring and that, with the information available at that time, no interruptions in terminal activity were expected.

The good performance of Maasvlakte II is part of a positive year for APM Terminals' global network, owned by Maersk and consisting of around 60 terminals worldwide. The group reported an EBIT of 1.7 billion dollars in 2025, 31% more than the previous year. Container volumes also grew across the network, supported by the launch of Gemini and strong demand. Terminal occupancy reached 86%, compared to 78% in 2024.
