The Port of Algeciras delegation began its institutional and business agenda in Tokyo this Tuesday with meetings with the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), the Embassy of Spain in Japan and representatives from ICEX. The trade mission, made up of institutional officials and 13 companies from the port community, aims to establish contacts with Japan’s maritime sector and present the logistics capabilities and services available at the port facilities in the Bay of Algeciras.

The first day began with a visit to the headquarters of the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), where the Algeciras delegation met with its secretary general, Masahiko Furuichi. The meeting addressed the main challenges and opportunities facing the international port industry.

The IAPH brings together port authorities and organizations involved in maritime activities in different countries and develops initiatives related to sustainability, technological transformation, and the evolution of maritime transport and port operations.

The agenda continued with a meeting with Spain’s ambassador to Japan, Íñigo de Palacio, and a working session with representatives from ICEX and the Economic and Commercial Office of the Embassy of Spain in Tokyo.

The meeting focused on the characteristics of the Japanese market and the business opportunities it offers Spanish companies, particularly in activities related to maritime services, logistics and international transport.

The day also includes a business meeting intended to facilitate contacts between companies in the Algeciras delegation and representatives of Japan’s maritime sector.

The mission is led by the president of the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA), Gerardo Landaluce; the president of the Chamber of Commerce of the Bay of Algeciras, Carlos Fenoy; and the president of the Comport port community, José Manuel Tejedor.

The business delegation comprises Pérez y Cía., BMT Repairs, Crosscomar, Elcome, Gibunco Ship Agency, Mertramar, Neko Ship Supply, Peninsula, ROSM, Sandvik Marine Electronics, Tanaval, Total Logistic Services and Zener Marine Elevator Services.

These companies operate in different segments of the maritime and port sector, including ship agency and supplies, ship repair, technical services, maritime electronics and logistics operations.

The trade program’s main event will take place this Wednesday at the Embassy of Spain in Tokyo, where the Port Authority will present the features, infrastructure and services of the Port of Algeciras to representatives of Japan’s maritime community.

The event will bring together companies and international maritime transport operators to showcase the services offered by the Algeciras port complex, located in the Strait of Gibraltar, at the junction of the shipping routes connecting the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.

The initiative is taking place within the framework of trade relations between Spain and Japan. According to data released by the APBA, Japan is Spain’s largest Asian investor and the second-largest destination for Spanish exports to Asia, which include agri-food products.

The mission is also supported by the Global SME program, promoted by the Chamber of Commerce of the Bay of Algeciras and co-financed at 85% by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Provincial Council of Cádiz.

This business internationalization support instrument helps small and medium-sized enterprises participate in trade initiatives in overseas markets through professional meetings, promotional activities and contacts with international operators.

The delegation’s agenda will continue over the coming days with further institutional and business activities, including participation in the TradeWinds Shipowners Forum Japan 2026, an international maritime sector event that will address issues related to decarbonization, alternative fuels and the evolution of maritime transport.
