before representatives of Japan’s maritime sector.
The Port of Algeciras begins a trade mission to Japan this week, with more than 30 professionals and representatives of 13 companies from its port community taking part. Led by the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA), the Chamber of Commerce, and the Port Community, the initiative aims to present the logistics and maritime services offering of the Strait’s port to companies, institutions, and representatives of Japan’s maritime sector.
The delegation is led by APBA President Gerardo Landaluce; the President of the Bay of Algeciras Chamber of Commerce, Carlos Fenoy; and the President of the Port Community, José Manuel Tejedor. The mission is supported by ICEX Tokyo and the Economic and Commercial Office of Spain in Japan.
The main institutional event will be held on Wednesday, October 28, at the Embassy of Spain in Tokyo, where a presentation of the Port of Algeciras will be given to Japan’s maritime community. Japan’s Vice Minister of Transport and Tourism, Yoshimichi Terada; the Secretary General of the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), Masahiko Furuichi; and Spain’s Ambassador to Japan, Íñigo de Palacio, are expected to attend.
The business delegation comprises A. Pérez y Cía., BMT Repairs, Crosscomar, Elcome, Gibunco Ship Agency, Mertramar, Neko Ship Supply, Peninsula, ROSM, Sandvik, Tanaval, Total Logistic Services, and Zener.
These 13 companies operate in various segments of the maritime, port, and logistics industries. Their participation will provide an opportunity to showcase services connected with the activities of Algeciras’ port community and to establish contacts with operators and companies in the Japanese market.
The mission’s agenda includes working meetings with ICEX, business meetings, and networking sessions, as well as participation in Forum Japan 2026, organized by the specialist publication TradeWinds.
The international meeting will address issues related to the decarbonization of maritime transport, the use of alternative fuels, and the resilience of maritime supply chains amid the international geopolitical context.
APBA President Gerardo Landaluce will take part in a panel discussion on these issues alongside the president of Japanese shipping company K Line, Takenori Igarashi; the Secretary General of the Japanese Shipowners’ Association, Yasuhiro Shinohara; and YK Bulkers Managing Director Yahya Karahasan.
The trade mission takes place against the backdrop of economic relations between Spain and Japan, which is the leading Asian investor in the Spanish market and the second-largest destination for Spanish exports to Asia, after China.
Spanish products sold in Japan include pork and olive oil, whose exports have benefited from the progressive reduction of tariffs under the Economic Partnership Agreement between the European Union and Japan, in force since 2019.
In the maritime sector, Japan has port facilities such as Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, and Kobe, which are among the ports assessed in the World Bank’s international operational efficiency indices. The Port of Algeciras is also included in these rankings, which assess the performance of container terminals worldwide.
The Algeciras delegation’s agenda will run throughout the week, with institutional meetings and business contacts aimed at showcasing the port’s capabilities and the services offered by participating companies to the Japanese maritime market.
