A delegation from the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) is this week in Ningbo (China) to participate in the Maritime Silk Road Port Cooperation Forum (MPF), the international forum of the Maritime Silk Road celebrating its eleventh edition under the motto "Resilient Synergy, Shared Prosperity." The president of the APBA, Gerardo Landaluce, participated as a guest of honor at the high-level meeting (High Level Roundtable Conference), where he announced that tomorrow Wednesday, during the opening ceremony of the forum, the ports of Algeciras and Ningbo-Zhoushan will sign an agreement to create a Green Maritime Corridor between both docks.
Landaluce has described the agreement as a "landmark step for sustainable transport between our ports." The signing event will be attended by the economic and commercial counselor of Spain in Shanghai, María Simó.
In his speech before port authorities and companies in the sector present at the high-level table, the president of the APBA stated that "to build efficient supply chains, it is necessary to accelerate decarbonization," and that for this, "solid international cooperation, teamwork to build more resilient, sustainable, and efficient maritime corridors" is essential. The meeting analyzed the current geopolitical challenges, the effects of climate change on port activity, and the tensions generated in supply chains by various external factors.
The relationship between the ports of Algeciras and Ningbo-Zhoushan dates back to 2018 when both institutions signed a collaboration agreement at the Palacio de la Moncloa in the presence of the presidents of Spain and China, as part of the ten trade agreements signed during the Chinese president's visit to Spain. Since then, the Chinese port has consolidated itself as Algeciras' primary trading partner in containerized goods, both in transshipment and import/export operations. In September 2024, both ports reaffirmed their alliance during the Ningbo forum with the aim of advancing the development of green maritime corridors from Asia.
