Kalmar has signed a Kalmar Care service agreement with Total Terminal International Algeciras (TTI Algeciras) to take care of the preventive and corrective mechanical maintenance of 40 cranes at the container terminal located in Isla Verde Exterior. The contract includes the eight Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes used in operations between ship and dock and the 32 Automated Stacking Cranes (ASC) that operate automatically in the yard.
The Finnish company has accounted for the order within its portfolio corresponding to the third quarter of 2026. Kalmar has not disclosed the amount or duration of the agreement, which expands the services it currently provides to the Algeciras terminal. According to the manufacturer, TTI Algeciras also operates a fleet of 23 Kalmar straddle carriers.
The eight STS cranes are the main loading and unloading equipment for containers at the terminal's docking front. The technical information published by TTI Algeciras distinguishes between Super Postpanamax units, with a reach of up to 24 rows of containers, and cranes adapted to the Malacca Max category, whose height above rail reaches 52 meters and whose arm allows operation up to the 25th row of ships.
The 32 ASCs, for their part, carry out storage operations in the automated blocks of the yard. TTI states that these equipment have a span of 25.4 meters, a nominal capacity of 40 tons, and technological systems intended to automatically control and manage the movements of containers and certain operational incidents
Alonso Luque, CEO of TTI Algeciras, explains that the terminal has selected Kalmar for the preventive mechanical maintenance of the STS and ASC due to the experience of its service team. Luque points out that having reliable maintenance is necessary to maintain the availability of the equipment while the facility continues to serve large container ships.
Sergio Peralta, director of Kalmar in Spain, places the new contract within the relationship both companies maintain in Algeciras and points out that the local team of the company will be responsible for providing the services contemplated in the agreement.
The contract comes while TTI Algeciras develops its expansion project on Phase B of Isla Verde Exterior. The terminal confirmed in April that the project incorporates 15.9 additional hectares to its concession and contemplates an investment of 150 million euros. The action will allow adding around 500,000 TEUs of annual capacity to increase from the current 1.6 million to approximately 2.1 million TEUs by 2028.
TTI Algeciras began operations in May 2010 and was conceived as the first semi-automated terminal in southern Europe and the Mediterranean. It currently has a concessioned area of 300,119 square meters, plus a public maneuvering area of 57,621 square meters, and has two docking lines of 850 and 550 meters, with depths of 18.5 and 17.5 meters, respectively.
The ownership structure of the terminal is led by the South Korean shipping company HMM, with 50% plus one share. The rest belongs to Isla Verde Algeciras Terminal Holding, a company part-owned by CMA Terminals Espagne, of the CMA CGM group, and DIF Capital Partners.
