APM Terminals Algeciras has started the removal of four of the oldest RTG cranes from its facilities with the controlled lowering of the first of these units, RTG 33. This action is part of the machinery renewal and decarbonization program that the terminal is developing.
RTG cranes are used to move and stack containers in the various aisles of the yard. The equipment included in this process consists of units 32, 33, 34, and 35, manufactured by ZPMC and used for more than 25 years in the terminal's operations. After this period of activity, the four machines have reached the end of their useful life.
The first intervention has been carried out on RTG 33 through a controlled lowering procedure. The operation required several weeks of preparation, coordination, and planning, applying safety measures aimed at protecting personnel, facilities, and other equipment, as well as reducing the impact of the work on the terminal's ordinary activity.
The dismantling process will continue over the next few weeks and will be carried out in different stages. The work includes the prior preparation of each structure, the controlled demolition of the cranes, and the subsequent removal of the resulting components and materials.
