The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) has started in recent days the construction works for what will be the new Fish Market of the Port of Algeciras, a project awarded by the institution to ASCH Infrastructures and Services. The project involves an investment close to 3.5 million euros and will be developed over 18 months, the expected time for the delivery of facilities designed to meet the current needs of the local fishing sector.
The new building will have two floors and a footprint of 22.75 by 50.50 meters, dimensions adapted to operational flows and current regulations. The APBA has designed modern and functional equipment, which will have a unloading dock of 4.5 meters wide and a landing dock for fishing boats of five meters, thus configuring an operational space in accordance with the demands of daily activity.
On the ground floor, there will be an auction room, along with reception, shipping, and storage areas for boxes, a cold room, an ice machine, changing rooms and bathrooms, as well as facilities for the veterinary office. The second floor will house the offices and a training room, among other complementary spaces for the operation of the market.
Once the new building is completed, the port institution will proceed with the demolition of the current facilities, located at the so-called Freezer Dock, an obsolete facility from a functional standpoint and which presents structural issues that recommend its replacement.
