The Swiss marine propulsion technology company WinGD has celebrated the delivery to A.P. Moller - Maersk of the Tema Maersk container ship, equipped with its X82DF-M/E multi-fuel engine platform, prepared to operate with methanol and compatible with ethanol.

The ship's christening ceremony took place at Yangzijiang Shipbuilding's facilities in China, attended by WinGD's CEO, Dominik Schneiter, and the Vice President of Market Development, Benny Hilström.

The delivery of the Tema Maersk constitutes a new reference in fleet renewal towards ships prepared to operate with different fuels. Maersk ordered dual-fuel X-DF-M engines from WinGD in March 2023 for a series of six 9,000 TEU container ships. The X82DF-M/E, installed on the Tema Mærsk in 2025, expands WinGD's offer for methanol to 82-centimeter diameter cylinder engines.

According to WinGD, this platform offers shipowners multi-fuel flexibility and readiness for a broader range of alcohol-based fuels, in a context where fuel availability and regulatory clarity continue to evolve.

Dominik Schneiter, CEO of WinGD, has stated that the addition of another methanol-ready ship to the global fleet is part of the maritime sector's decarbonization process. The executive has indicated that collaboration with shipowners like Maersk enables the development of dual propulsion solutions tailored to current commercial, operational, and environmental needs, with the ability to respond to future net zero emission scenarios.

Schneiter added that the flexibility to use different alcoholic fuels prevents early operators from being tied to a single technological option while the fuel market evolves.

For his part, Ole Graa Jakobsen, Head of Fleet Technology at Maersk, stated that the development of future-ready engine technology is a critical step to provide flexibility and reliability to global supply chains. He also indicated that the energy transition of maritime transport requires collaboration between shipowners, regulators, fuel producers, infrastructure providers, and engine manufacturers.
