The ferry "Monte Express" has been docked at the port of Algeciras since June 1, where it has completed the necessary Maritime Captaincy inspections for its operational incorporation into the Algeciras-Tanger Med line. The vessel has been chartered by the Moroccan shipping company AML with the goal of operating on this route during the Operation Paso del Estrecho (OPE) 2026.

The vessel comes from the Corsica Linea fleet, a company that decided to sell this unit after the recent incorporation of the ferry "Capu di Maru", previously known as "Kalliste", purchased from La Méridionale. Since May 2026, the "Monte Express" is owned by the Egyptian shipping company UME.

UME maintains a notable operational connection with Spanish shipping companies. Currently, the company has chartered the roll-on/roll-off "Gubal Express" to Trasmed to cover the transportation of dangerous goods on the Balearic lines. Likewise, the ferry "Wasa Express", also owned by them, continues chartered on the Algeciras-Tanger Med route.

The "Monte Express" was built as building number 280 at the Ateliers et Chantiers du Havre shipyards and entered service in May 1991 under the French flag with the original name "Monte d'Oro", then operated by the Société Nationale Maritime Corse-Méditerranée (SNCM).

Regarding its technical specifications, the vessel registers 22,070 gross tonnage and 4,155 deadweight tons. Its main dimensions are 145 meters in length, 25.70 meters in beam, and 6.30 meters in draft. It has capacity for 508 passengers and features a garage of 1,630 linear meters for vehicles. Its propulsion is provided by four Wärtsilä 12V32 engines, which deliver a combined power of 14,800 kW and allow it to reach a service speed of 19 knots. Its IMO number is 8911516.
