The Port of Gothenburg has awarded Boskalis Sweden AB a contract valued at approximately 18 million euros for the execution of blasting and dredging works as part of the strategic project Skandia Gateway.
This action is part of the port's contribution to a far-reaching initiative aimed at increasing operational capacity for larger vessels. Specifically, the project will allow the draft of the access channel to be increased from the current 13.5 meters to a maximum of 17.5 meters.
The award has taken place after a bidding process in which five companies participated. As explained by Jan Andersson, project manager at the port, it is a contractor with extensive experience in this type of work.
The works represent one of the last key milestones within the part of the project that corresponds to the port, which since 2024 has been carrying out reinforcement work on docks at its container terminal as a preliminary step to these actions. The dredging and blasting works are scheduled between October 2026 and March 2027. Subsequently, the Swedish Maritime Administration will take over the dredging of the outer channel, with an estimated start in the autumn of 2027.
The Skandia Gateway project is a joint initiative between the Swedish Maritime Administration, the Swedish Transport Administration and the Port of Gothenburg, aimed at ensuring Sweden's direct access to global maritime trade in a context of growing vessel sizes.
The Port of Gothenburg is currently the largest port in Scandinavia and the only one in Sweden capable of operating with the largest ocean-going vessels, a position it aims to strengthen with this ambitious expansion of its infrastructure.
