The ports of Algeciras and Tarifa will take part in the development of the INFRAWISE project, a technological initiative aimed at investigating new solutions for monitoring the condition of port infrastructure by combining satellite observations, ground-based sensors, and environmental data. The project, promoted by the Spanish company Detektia, is supported by the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) and funded by the European FIERCE program, part of Horizon Europe.

The initiative is in the development phase and aims to test the feasibility of a hybrid system capable of analyzing both progressive deformations in infrastructure and structural responses that occur over short periods of time. This technology is designed to provide information on the behavior of wharves, breakwaters, and other structures subject to changing weather and operating conditions.

The APBA will serve as the project's test site during the six months scheduled for its implementation. The program includes the installation of two high-precision monitoring systems at infrastructure locations selected for their structural and operational importance within the port facilities of Algeciras and Tarifa.

The technological development is based on a Detektia solution using the InSAR technique, which relies on radar images obtained by the Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites. This process makes it possible to identify ground and structural deformations with millimetric precision, as well as to monitor movements that occur gradually.

However, certain structural changes related to waves, wind, storms, or loads arising from port activity can occur over shorter intervals. To study these phenomena, INFRAWISE will investigate integrating satellite data with measurements obtained using high-frequency ground-based sensors, along with meteorological and oceanographic information.

Also taking part in the project is DeepInsight Blue, a company specializing in infrastructure monitoring and port risk management, which will provide ground-based measurement systems and its expertise in implementing this type of solution. Data obtained using the various technologies will be brought together in a shared analysis environment to study the relationships between environmental conditions and structural responses.

INFRAWISE is funded by the European FIERCE program, a Horizon Europe initiative that supports the development of technological solutions related to Earth observation and the use of space-based information. Detektia was selected in the program's first call for financial support, under the Ideation category, which is intended for early-stage research proposals.

Expected results include technical and operational validation of the hybrid system, an assessment of its usefulness for inspection and preventive maintenance, and the identification of potential applications at other port facilities. The project also includes preparing a roadmap for the future development of monitoring services that could be deployed at ports across Europe.
