The Spanish market of bunkering reached in July about 795,000 tons of fuel supplied to ships, a volume approximately 1% higher than that recorded in the same month of the previous year, according to the analysis published by ENGINE, a market intelligence and marine fuel purchasing management platform, based on official statistics. Within this market, Algeciras concentrated 36% of the national total, ahead of Las Palmas with 27%, and Barcelona with 16%.
ENGINE indicates that Spanish sales of marine fuel have averaged approximately 775,000 tons per month over the last five years, up to 2025. The July record was above that reference, although it was 7% lower than in June, when about 854,000 tons were supplied, the largest monthly volume recorded since November.
The analysis includes both conventional marine fuels, including VLSFO and LSMGO, as well as mixtures with biofuels, such as B30-VLSFO, providing a comprehensive view of the evolution of the supply market to ships in the main Spanish ports.
Algeciras recorded one of the main increases among the large centers of bunkering in the country. ENGINE estimates its activity in July at approximately 285,000 tons, 12% more than a year earlier. Detailed data from Ports of the State specifies the volume at 284,571 tons, compared to 253,675 tons in July 2025.
The monthly evolution allows Algeciras to increase its weight within the national market. Las Palmas supplied 213,547 tons, 4% less in year-on-year terms according to ENGINE, while Barcelona accounted for 126,426 tons, also with a reduction close to 4% compared to July of the previous year. Together, the three ports accounted for about 79% of the fuel supply to ships registered in Spain during the month.
The behavior of Ceuta also stands out in ENGINE's analysis. The port reached about 66,000 tons, 35% more than in July 2025. Ports of the State places the exact volume at 65,882 tons, compared to 48,949 tons in the same month of the previous year. Thus, the two ports in the Strait jointly totaled just over 350,000 tons during July.
ENGINE also reports the growth of Huelva, where supply doubled to about 10,000 tons, although it continued to represent around 1% of the national market. Conversely, Santa Cruz de Tenerife reduced its activity by 73% year-on-year, down to about 11,000 tons, its lowest monthly record since January 2020. Its market share in Spain dropped from 5% to 1%.
The figures from Ports of the State allow for an expansion of the analysis to the entire set of the first seven months of the year. Algeciras accumulated between January and July 1,721,718 tons, practically the same volume as the 1,723,394 tons from the same period in 2025, with a variation of -0.1%. The total for Spanish ports reached 5,589,796 tons, compared to 5,522,570 tons a year earlier, representing an accumulated increase of 1.2%.
Las Palmas adds 1.51 million tons during that period, 5.2% less, while Barcelona reaches 846,906 tons, 4.2% more. Ceuta accounts for 433,168 tons, with an accumulated growth of 5.1%.
