EED Sector Data · Methodology

How the ranking is built

What each column of the Top 100 carriers measures, where the data come from and what they do not say.

Definitions

What is measured

The nominal capacity, in TEU (twenty-foot containers), of the container ships each carrier operates. A ship counts for whoever runs it commercially, whether it owns or charters it. It does not measure cargo carried or actual use of that capacity.

Owned, chartered and share

Total fleet is owned plus chartered; “% chartered” is the chartered share of the total. Market share is the percentage of the world liner fleet the carrier operates, as published by Alphaliner.

Orderbook

Ships firmly ordered from shipyards and not yet delivered, in TEU and number of ships. “% fleet” compares that orderbook with the fleet the carrier operates today: it shows how much it will grow if it retires no ships.

Changes

Alphaliner only publishes today’s snapshot. El Estrecho Digital stores it daily with its date and compares the latest with the most recent one at least 28 days old. Until that history builds up, the table shows no changes.

TEU capacity does not distinguish reefer capacity or ship size, and does not reflect slots that carriers swap within alliances. Alphaliner revises its data continuously: a figure may change from one day to the next because of a source correction, not only because ships join or leave a fleet.
