The Port of Algeciras has closed the first quarter of the year with a total movement of 23.4 million tons, which represents a 7.2% decrease compared to the same period of the previous year. However, the month of March has marked a turning point, with a strong recovery of activity after the interruptions caused by the storms recorded at the beginning of the year. Only in March, the Algeciras docks moved 9.3 million tons, 6.9% more than in the same month of the previous year, with widespread growth in most segments.
Liquid bulk reached 2.7 million tons, growing by 5.6%, mainly driven by the export of refined products. Solid bulk grew by 43.3%, reaching 29,761 tons, thanks to the importation of scrap. For its part, general cargo totaled 5.9 million tons, an increase of 5.7%, supported by the strong increase in container traffic. Containerized traffic stood out particularly, with 459,669 TEUs moved in March, an increase of 27.4%, recording one of the best historical months for the port.
In the Strait area, significant increases were also recorded: passenger traffic grew by 28% and vehicle traffic by 24%, consolidating the recovery of Strait flows.
Other indicators also evolved upwards, such as fuel supply, which reached 246,669 tons, growing by 2.2%, and fresh fish, with 65 tons, representing a 47.5% increase.
In the quarterly accumulation, the port shows signs of recovery in various segments, highlighting the growth of container traffic by 9.3% and the progressive stabilization of flows in the Strait, although still with declines in some indicators like liquid bulk or passenger and truck movement.
