Repsol has supplied 2,800 tons of bioethanol to the container ship Antonia Maersk, from the shipping company Maersk, in the first bunkering operation of this type carried out at the Port of Barcelona and one of the first in the Mediterranean. The operation took place under real commercial conditions, following a loading and unloading maneuver of the vessel, and confirmed the availability of infrastructure, logistics, and operational capacity necessary for this type of supply.

The fuel was delivered through the Bahía Candela, the most recent supply vessel in Repsol's fleet, operated by Mureloil and designed to supply both conventional marine fuels and next-generation energy products. During the operation, the Bahía Candela operated with its battery system, allowing the fuel transfer to be completed without generating local emissions in the port.

According to Repsol, the operation responds to the growing demand for marine fuels based on alcohols and confirms that the value chain is ready for the development of other similar options, including methanol. The company frames this supply within an offer that combines conventional marine fuels, renewables, and low-carbon emission solutions for its shipping clients.

Juan Abascal, General Executive Director of Industrial Transformation and Circular Economy at Repsol, explained: "with this supply we reaffirm our commitment to the decarbonization of maritime transport through solutions available today and prepared to grow in the future. At Repsol we provide shipping companies with a reliable supply chain and a multi-energy strategy that combines different renewable fuels to support the sector in a safe, competitive, and sustainable transition."

The Antonia Maersk is not the shipping company’s first vessel to test alternative fuels based on alcohol. The feeder Laura Maersk, with a capacity of 1,800 TEUs, became in 2023 the world’s first dual-fuel container ship capable of operating on methanol, and has since completed voyages both with 100% ethanol and with mixtures of ethanol and methanol. Maersk currently has 23 dual-fuel container ships designed to operate on methanol, and is exploring ethanol as an alternative for those same vessels.

Emma Mazhari, Vice President of Energy Markets at Maersk, noted: "after the tests with ethanol conducted on the Laura Maersk, this new supply to the Antonia Maersk represents another step in our efforts to explore low-emission fuel solutions that can be scaled. Being the first test with ethanol on one of our large dual-fuel vessels, with a capacity for 16,000 TEUs, allows us to deepen our understanding of the operational potential of ethanol on a large scale." Mazhari added that the shipping company is working with port authorities and sector partners to develop the infrastructure and necessary procedures to facilitate the supply of ethanol, as one of the avenues they are exploring to diversify their fuel portfolio.

José Alberto Carbonell, president of the Port of Barcelona, stated: "this operation demonstrates that the Port of Barcelona is ready to support the large-scale deployment of new low-carbon emission fuels, as part of our Energy Transition Plan." Carbonell positioned the port as a logistical and energy hub in the Mediterranean committed to providing the infrastructure, operational capabilities, and collaborative environment necessary for the decarbonization of the maritime sector.
