The Port of Málaga carried out for the first time a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) supply service at anchor, in a ship-to-ship (STS) operation conducted with two container ships from the MSC shipping company that coincided in the Málaga bay. This action represents an expansion of the port's service offerings in the field of alternative fuels.

The first supply corresponded to the vessel MSC Audrey, with an approximate volume of 5,500 m³, becoming the first operation of this kind executed at anchor in the bay of Málaga. The second action took place with the vessel MSC Virginia, with an approximate volume of 7,000 m³. Together, both operations exceeded 12,500 m³ of LNG supplied.

The work was carried out last weekend under the ship-to-ship modality, applying the international safety protocols established by SIGTTO, OCIMF, and SGMF. During the operations, safety and maritime exclusion zones were established and coordination was carried out among all involved parties: Port Authority, Maritime Captaincy, port pilots, tugboats, consignees, suppliers, and shipping companies. The operations concluded without incidents and in accordance with established procedures.

This action adds to the LNG supply services that the Port of Málaga has been providing regularly to different types of vessels at the docks during their calls. As part of the Green Port initiative, the port thus extends its sustainability strategy through LNG bunkering, aiming to reduce the carbon footprint and adapt to the growing demand from shipping companies for alternative fuels. The availability of this operation positions the Port of Málaga within the network of Mediterranean ports prepared to offer this type of services.
