The port of Algeciras moved 8.62 million tons of ro-ro traffic during the first eight months of 2026, 1.4% more than in the same period of the previous year, according to the latest data published by Ports of the State. The figure places the port of Algeciras among the main rolled cargo nodes of the Spanish port system.
The accumulated volume of Algeciras represents 17% of the 50.57 million tons of ro-ro traffic accounted for in the set of ports of general interest by August. In the same period of 2025, the Bay had recorded 8.50 million tons, so this year it adds nearly 118,000 additional tons.
During August, the Algeciras ro-ro traffic remained virtually stable. The port accounted for 720,939 tons, compared to 719,770 in the same month of 2025, with a positive difference of just over 1,100 tons.
In the overall Spanish port system, rolled cargo traffic reached 50,573,456 tons between January and August, 0.2% more than the 50,469,602 tons of the same period of the previous fiscal year. The accumulated evolution contrasts with the behavior of August, a month in which 5.76 million tons were moved, representing a 6.2% increase in year-on-year terms.
Baleares leads national ro-ro traffic, with 10.57 million tons by August, although it registers a decrease of 0.4%. Next is Valencia, with 9.30 million and also a reduction of 0.4%.
Algeciras occupies the third position by volume, with its 8.62 million tons, ahead of Barcelona, which recorded 8.18 million and registered a growth of 2.3%.
These four enclaves jointly concentrate around 36.7 million tons, which accounts for more than 72% of all the ro-ro traffic managed by the Spanish ports of general interest during the first eight months of the year.
After this group are Las Palmas, with 4 million tons and a growth of 4.4%, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with 3.13 million and an increase of 0.4%. Santander accounted for 1.35 million tons, a decrease of 4.5%.
Among the ports with volumes less than a million tons are Vigo, with 855,658 tons and a decrease of 4.8%; Almería, with 777,112 tons and a growth of 13%; Bilbao, with 709,806 tons and a reduction of 16.9%; and the Bay of Cádiz, with 633,982 tons and an increase of 4.2%.
The Andalusian ports totaled 10.84 million tons of ro-ro traffic by August, which represents approximately 21.4% of all rolled cargo moved by Spanish ports. The Bay of Algeciras accounts for nearly 80% of the ro-ro activity of the seven port authorities of Andalusia.
After Algeciras, Almería registers the largest Andalusian volume, with 777,112 tons and a year-on-year growth of 13%. The Bay of Cádiz reaches 633,982 tons, a 4.2% increase, while Huelva accounts for 375,211 tons, a 10.4% decrease.
Málaga adds 295,055 tons and increases by 2%; Sevilla records 91,710 tons, with a decrease of 16.7%; and Motril accounts for 44,286 tons. In this last case, the statistic shows a reduction of 88.2% compared to the 375,884 tons recorded during the first eight months of 2025.
National data also show significant differences between port authorities. Alicante increases by 35.1%, up to 74,282 tons, while Tarragona reaches 244,667 tons, 5.4% more. Vilagarcía goes from 69,647 to 240,053 tons, although its volume remains low compared to the main enclaves specialized in this traffic.
The Ports of the State statistics account for within the ro-ro traffic the operations of loading, unloading, transit, transshipment and tare. This type of traffic is associated with the transport of goods using units that access or leave the ship by rolling means, with particular weight in regular maritime connections.
