The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) and the Port Community have concluded their participation in SMM Hamburg 2026, held from September 1 to 4, where the Algeciras delegation has focused its commercial activity on the offer of vessel services and on the position achieved by the port in the supply of low-carbon transition fuels.
The representation of the Port of Algeciras has participated in the German fair under the brand Green Energy Hub, coinciding with an edition in which the decarbonization of maritime transport, safety, energy efficiency, and the adaptability of supply chains have occupied a large part of the agenda of meetings and conferences at SMM.
The APBA communicated after the fair that, during the first half of 2026, the supply of low-carbon transition fuels, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) and renewable-origin liquefied biomethane, increased by more than 6% at the docks and anchorages of Algeciras. This evolution allows the port to maintain commercial activity this year that in 2025 placed it among the top three European LNG bunkering hubs.
This positioning was based on the figures recorded last year. In 2025, the Port of Algeciras supplied 333,833 cubic meters of LNG to vessels through 78 ship-to-ship operations. According to data from Gasnam published then by the APBA itself, Algeciras occupied the third position in Europe in this segment, behind Rotterdam and Marseille Fos. Of that volume, 51,923 cubic meters corresponded to bioLNG.
The latest data from Gasnam, compiled from information from Kpler and published coinciding with the SMM event, also provides a reference on the evolution of the Iberian market. Between January and June 2026, LNG bunkering in the Iberian Peninsula reached 4,742 GWh, 62% more than during the same period in 2025. Within that volume, 228 GWh corresponded to BioLNG, around 5% of the total.
The available supply infrastructure in Spain and Portugal has also increased. Gasnam reports nine vessels dedicated to the supply of LNG during 2026, compared to six in the previous year. In ship-to-ship operations, the Iberian Peninsula currently concentrates 27.4% of the European volume, while the continental market recorded a 25.3% increase during the first half of the year.
Algeciras is also among the five locations in the Peninsula included by Gasnam, according to Kpler data, among the ten main European supply points for LNG to vessels. Along with the Algeciras port, Gibraltar, Barcelona, Sines, and Malaga appear.
These figures have been part of the commercial context with which the APBA and Algeciras Port Community COMPORT have attended Hamburg, where they shared space in the Spain pavilion, in Hall B1.OG, stand 119. During the four days, the Algeciras representation presented to shipowners, operators, and international suppliers the available capacities in the Bay to accommodate maritime calls and operations.
The displayed offer included activities such as vessel consignment, naval and electronic repairs, provisions, catering, crew changes, maritime legal services, underwater work, Marpol services, marine electronics, equipment supply, and bunkering. The space of the Port of Algeciras also hosted a meeting on Wednesday, September 2, with clients and representatives of the maritime sector.
Alongside representatives of the APBA and the Port Community, Pérez y Cía. Group, Ayllón Abogados, Alfaship, Arola Shipping, Bayport Global Supplies, BMT Repairs, Cadiship Shipping and Logistic Agents, CJ Services Strait of Gibraltar, Crosscomar, Dino Theo Atlantis, Elcome Europe, Garant Safety, Gas Marine, Gibunco Ship Agency, Incargo, Jason Marine Electronics, Neko Ship Supply, Reparaciones Marítimas Españolas (Remesa), Radio Onda Servicios Marítimos, Sandvik Marine Electronics, and Zener Marine Elevator participated.
The participation from Algeciras took place at an edition of SMM that exceeded 50,000 participants from 134 countries. The organization accounted for around 2,300 exhibiting companies from 66 countries, spread across more than 90,000 square meters and twelve pavilions, with more than 70% of the exhibitors coming from outside Germany. The figures communicated by SMM at the close of the fair are preliminary as they were calculated before the last day was completely concluded.
SMM brings together shipyards, shipping companies, equipment manufacturers, suppliers, classification societies, technology companies, institutions, and organizations related to the maritime sector every two years in Hamburg. The 2026 edition has incorporated into its program issues related to decarbonization, energy efficiency, digitalization, and artificial intelligence, along with a greater emphasis on maritime safety and the capacity of logistical chains to face disruptions in international trade.
The next edition of SMM is scheduled for September 5 to 8, 2028, in Hamburg.
