The Port of Algeciras analyzes the role of telecommunications as an engine of innovation in port logistics

The president of the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA), Gerardo Landaluce, took advantage of the professional event "The Mornings of the Night", held this Monday at the Millán Picazo Auditorium in Algeciras, to announce the results of the recent participation of the Port of Algeciras in the Maritime Port Forum 2026, held last week in Ningbo (China). During the meeting, Landaluce delivered two achievements obtained at the international forum: the renewal of the alliance with the Port of Ningbo, the largest in the world by volume of activity, with the signing of an agreement for the development of a green maritime corridor between both port clusters, and the recognition as a success case of the PortCDM (Port Collaborative Decision Making) system of the APBA.

Landaluce emphasized that the energy transition represents "a true revolution" that can only be achieved through the collaboration of all actors involved in the logistics chain. In this framework, the green maritime corridor with Ningbo is aimed at cooperation between both ports for the adoption of alternative fuels, the reduction of emissions during port calls, and the optimization of port operations with environmental criteria. The connection between Algeciras, the main logistics node of the Strait of Gibraltar, and Ningbo gives the agreement a singular relevance in the routes that link Western Mediterranean with Asia.

During the event, the president of the APBA presented Jesús Medina Blanco, CIO of the Port Authority, and Agustín Martínez Delgado, head of Planning, with the award with which the organization of the Maritime Port Forum 2026 has recognized the PortCDM. This tool allows real-time information exchange among all actors of the port community —shipping lines, terminals, freight forwarders, pilots, and the Port Authority itself— to optimize vessel berthing, facilitate "just in time" operations, and reduce both wait times and emissions associated with port activity.

In the presentation on the Digital Transformation and Innovation Strategy of the Port of Algeciras, Medina highlighted the importance of collaborative work to achieve the highest levels of efficiency and reminded that Algeciras has been the most efficient port in Europe for the fifth consecutive year, according to World Bank data.

For her part, María Román del Molino, head of Operations and Services to the Port Community Department of the APBA, explained the applications of new technologies at the Port of Algeciras based on real cases, such as the predictive information provided by the Port Community System (PCS), a tool that facilitates decision-making in the management of strategic traffics such as RoRo and passenger transport.

The event "The Mornings of the Night", organized by the Official College of Telecommunications Engineers of Western Andalusia and Ceuta (COITAOC-ASITANO) with the collaboration of the APBA, gathered professionals and representatives of companies in the ICT sector to analyze the role of telecommunications as an engine of innovation in the logistics-port sector. The program included two sectorial panels, one dedicated to "The reality of new technologies in the logistics-port sector" and another to "Solutions for the digitalization of logistics and transport", in addition to a guided tour of the Port of Algeciras by boat and a networking space.

The institutional opening featured the participation of Landaluce, the dean of COITAOC, Manuel Ortigosa Brun, and the mayor of Algeciras, José Ignacio Landaluce, as well as the support of Nieves Valenzuela Romero, general director of the Promotion of Innovation of the Junta de Andalucía.
