HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort GmbH, located in the Port of Hamburg, has ordered eight hybrid straddle carriers Konecranes Noell NSC 644 EHY as part of its strategy to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The contract was formalized in the fourth quarter of 2025 and the units are expected to enter service by the end of 2026.

The eight new machines will be used for container transport between the dock and the yard, as well as for stacking operations and handling trucks and trains on the land side. These machines will replace older models powered exclusively by diesel that perform the same functions.

Each of the new units is equipped with a diesel generator and an onboard battery system, allowing for significantly lower fuel consumption and emissions reduction compared to conventional diesel propulsion, without compromising performance. The straddle carriers also incorporate a lifting system that allows the operator to access the cabin comfortably.

This investment supports our long-term development plans for Container Terminal Tollerort. We have extensive experience with Konecranes Noell straddle carriers and value their solid performance. Choosing their proven hybrid solution helps us meet our CO2 reduction goals while maintaining the high productivity we need in daily operations,” declared Ingo Witte, CEO of HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort GmbH.

The eight straddle carriers are based on Konecranes' latest design concept, which emphasizes the modularity of the propulsion system. The newly designed platform allows for relatively simple upgrades to other types of propulsion, such as fully electric with batteries or hydrogen. This gives terminal operators the freedom to modify their equipment’s propulsion configuration at any time.

Our latest design concept was developed to offer customers greater flexibility in how their machines are powered. By choosing this configuration, HHLA is protecting its long-term investment as operational requirements and CO2 reduction strategies evolve,” said Peter Kania, sales director of Port Solutions at Konecranes.

HHLA operates Konecranes equipment at various terminals in the Port of Hamburg. This latest order consolidates the collaboration between both companies and reflects a shared focus on operational efficiency and the path to zero direct emissions.

The agreement is part of Konecranes' comprehensive roadmap called Ecolifting, a step-by-step program toward zero direct emissions that supports the decarbonization of port operations. The company’s solutions range from renewable diesel propulsion to hybrid and fully electrified fleets, as well as emerging options such as hydrogen, all designed to meet the needs of each customer in the present and the future.
