On the occasion of World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5, the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) has launched Environmental Week, a program of activities focused on raising awareness, dissemination, and active involvement of the port community. The initiative is part of the APBA's Green Strategy and this edition involves collaboration with APM Terminals Algeciras, a company adhering to this strategy, through its 'Go Green' program, in a joint action aimed at cooperation with the port community on sustainability.
The programming revolves around four major events that will take place from Wednesday, June 3, to Saturday, June 6, with the aim of combining educational content, technical training, specialized debate, and citizen participation.
Among the scheduled activities, the earliest is the exhibition 'The threat of plastic in marine life', located in the pre-embarkation hall of Ceuta at the Maritime Station of Algeciras and open to the public throughout June. The exhibit aims to raise awareness about the issue of plastic and invite reflection on its impact on the natural environment through real photographs taken in the Bay of Algeciras, provided by Ecolocaliza, a company also adhering to the APBA's Green Strategy.
This Wednesday, June 3, the APBA has organized the webinar 'Carbon Footprint Port Bay of Algeciras', aimed at the port community. The session covers the basic concepts of greenhouse gases (GHG) and the carbon footprint, as well as its application in the port environment. During the meeting, the results corresponding to the 2025 exercise in the Port of the Bay of Algeciras, emission reduction strategies, and the main lines of work aimed at the progressive decarbonization of port activity will be presented. APM Terminals Algeciras will also share its roadmap for emission reduction in its facilities, as well as its participation in the LIFE CO2RK project.
On Friday, June 5, coinciding with World Environment Day, the debate table 'Dialogue for the Climate' will take place, organized together with APM Terminals Algeciras and with the participation of companies adhering to the Green Strategy such as EVOS, Acerinox, APM Terminals Algeciras, and MOEVE. The event will kick off with a conference by Isabel Moreno, meteorologist, physicist, and presenter of 'Aquí la Tierra' (TVE), who will offer an educational perspective on the dimension of the climate challenge. Following that, there will be a debate table addressing issues such as climate action in the port area, adaptation plans, and best practices being implemented in the industrial and logistical environment of the Bay of Algeciras.
As a closure of the week, on Saturday, June 6, the port authority has organized a waste collection day on the beach of El Chinarral in Algeciras, directed at workers of the Port Authority, adhering companies, their families, and the general public. The activity aims to promote citizen participation, environmental awareness, and the conservation of the coastline of the Campo de Gibraltar.
With this set of actions, the APBA continues its commitment to sustainability, the fight against climate change, and the involvement of the entire port community in environmental protection, in line with the objectives defined in its Green Strategy.
