The APBA and the UCA begin a new study on the economic impact of the ports of Algeciras and Tarifa

The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA), in collaboration with the University of Cádiz (UCA), has launched a new Economic Impact Study of the activity carried out in the ports of Algeciras and Tarifa. The aim of this project is focused on quantifying its contribution to employment, business activity, and the overall economic fabric.

This work continues the previous analyses carried out in the area and is integrated into a nationwide initiative coordinated by the Public Body Ports of the State (OPPE). The overall proposal is aimed at measuring the real incidence of the Port System in regional and national areas.

Currently, the research is in its phase of data collection from primary sources. For the development of this stage, the involvement of companies and private entities that operate regularly in the vicinity of the port facilities has been required. The contribution of the corporate fabric is considered an indispensable element for forming a complete, rigorous, and reliable perspective on the economic effects generated by the operations of terminals and their associated companies. The parameters subject to measurement include labor and financial variables such as the volume of employment, costs derived from personnel, turnover, level of investments, volume of purchases, and tax contributions, in addition to the level of direct and indirect link of each business with the port area.

The technical development of the document applies a methodology adapted to the general guidelines established by Ports of the State. This system is based on the use of input-output table models and is adjusted to the specific conditions and particularities that define the port system of the autonomous community of Andalusia. The chosen methodological approach facilitates a detailed examination of commercial activity, its structural dependency relationships, and the set of productive sectors linked to the logistics nodes.

The applied analysis tools will estimate the direct, indirect, and induced effects arising from the dynamics of the docks through normalized macroeconomic indicators, including Gross Added Value (GAV), total production, and the number of jobs generated. The data obtained will generate a global balance regarding the contribution of the Algeciras and Tarifa docks to the growth of the environment. The statistical model will serve as a basis for examining changes and the evolution of financial impact over the coming years, providing useful data for sector transparency and the formulation of medium- and long-term strategic plans.
