DFDS recorded during August transport volumes of goods in the Strait of Gibraltar well above those accounted for in the same month of 2025, according to the latest monthly traffic update published by the company. The performance of this corridor contrasts with the stability of the entire ferry network of the shipping company and with the declines recorded in other European areas.
The company does not detail in its report the specific volume transported in the Strait nor the year-on-year percentage variation, limiting itself to stating that activity was 'well above' August of last year. The figure affects a market in which DFDS has operations from Algeciras, both with Tangier Med and with Ceuta.
On the connection between Algeciras and Tangier Med, DFDS provides services for passengers, vehicles, and goods, in addition to having specific operations for cargo units. The shipping company also maintains regular connections between Algeciras and Ceuta, as part of its activity in the Strait of Gibraltar.
In the entirety of its network, DFDS transported during August a total of 3.133 million linear meters of goods, a figure practically identical to the 3.134 million recorded in August 2025.
The evolution was different depending on the corridors. Traffic in the North Sea exceeded the levels of the previous year, with higher volumes on most routes. In the Mediterranean, on the contrary, activity was slightly below 2025 mainly due to the performance of one of the connections operated by the company.
Volumes also decreased in the English Channel, an evolution that DFDS relates to a general reduction in the ferry market in that area. The Baltic was likewise below the level reached a year earlier. In contrast to these results, the Strait of Gibraltar is expressly mentioned in the report as one of the corridors where traffic was clearly above 2025.
In the last twelve months, DFDS has transported 41.774 million linear meters of goods, compared to 41.618 million from the previous period, representing an increase of 0.4%. If the data is adjusted to account for the changes introduced in the company routes, the volume shows a decrease of 0.5%.
Passenger traffic showed a different evolution during August. DFDS accounted for 934,000 travelers, 4.6% less than the 980,000 recorded in the same month of 2025. The company mainly attributes this decline to the reduction of passengers in the Dover Strait, in line with the general evolution of that market.
In the accumulated last twelve months, DFDS transported 4.924 million passengers, 12.4% less than the 5.619 million from the previous period. Adjusting the result for the changes made in the routes, the reduction is 5.3%.
