The Bay of Algeciras concentrates 31.3% of the supply of liquid fuels to ships provided at Spanish general interest ports during the first eight months of 2026. The Algeciras facilities recorded 2.06 million tons until August, keeping Algeciras as the main hub of the state port system in this type of activity.
The volume recorded in the Bay represents a growth of 2.9% compared to the 2 million tons recorded during the same period in 2025, according to data from Ports of the State. In absolute terms, the port has added nearly 58,000 additional tons of liquid fuels supplied to ships.
The behavior of August shows a variation higher than that of the annual cumulative. During the month, 312,107 tons were supplied in the Bay of Algeciras, compared to 276,921 in August 2025. The difference exceeds 35,000 tons and corresponds to an interannual growth of 12.7%.
The evolution of Algeciras occurs in a context of growth in bunkering within the overall Spanish port system. General interest ports supplied 6.58 million tons of liquid fuels between January and August, 3.9% more than the 6.33 million recorded during the same period of the previous year.
Algeciras maintains a difference of over 300,000 tons compared to the second Spanish port by volume. Las Palmas recorded 1.74 million tons until August, 3.4% less than during the first eight months of 2025.
Both hubs add nearly 3.8 million tons, thus jointly accounting for 57.7% of the supply of liquid fuels to ships recorded at general interest ports.
Barcelona occupies third place, with 980,013 tons and an interannual growth of 4%. Next is Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with 576,233 tons and an increase of 35%; Ceuta, with 490,785 tons and 3.6% more; and Valencia, with 348,003 tons, 4.8% above the same period of the previous year.
The concentration of this activity is even greater when considering the first three hubs. Algeciras, Las Palmas, and Barcelona account for 72.6% of the bunkering recorded by the state port system until August.
The growth of Santa Cruz de Tenerife ranks among the main variations of the period among the ports with the highest volume. The Canary Island hub has risen from 426,956 tons in the first eight months of 2025 to 576,233 tons this year, a difference approaching 150,000 tons.
In the whole of Andalusia, the seven port authorities recorded around 2.27 million tons of liquid fuels supplied to ships. This figure represents approximately 34.5% of the national total, although the activity is mainly concentrated in the Bay of Algeciras, which accounts for over 90% of the Andalusian volume.
At a considerable distance is Huelva, with 89,843 tons and a growth of 33.8%. Málaga recorded 59,397 tons, compared to 21,045 in the same period of 2025, while Almería reached 24,268 tons and the Bay of Cádiz recorded 23,622.
Motril summed 6,539 tons and Sevilla 8,925 tons. The data indicates, therefore, a very unequal distribution of this activity among the Andalusian ports and places Algeciras as the main fuel supply point for ships in the community and among all Spanish general interest ports.
During the month of August, the state port system recorded 879,872 tons of liquid fuels supplied to ships, compared to 810,653 tons in the same month of the previous year. The monthly increase was 8.5%, higher than the accumulated growth since the beginning of the year.
Algeciras alone represented around 35.5% of the bunkering carried out in Spanish ports during August, with its 312,107 tons. Las Palmas recorded 224,162 tons during the same month.
